The Council's in Purdah - Now's it's Taken the Opportunity to Restrict Car Parking Even Further!
(We mistakenly published a photograph on this blog entry from which one of the council workers could be identified - we unreservedly apologise for any embarrasment this may have caused to this individual)
Today March 21st., two days after Powys County Coucil went into Purdah (see our earlier post) and the Council have taken it upon themselves to restrict parking even further in Hay-on-Wye.
Early today, Powys County Council's 'White Lining' team arrived in town and commenced white lining all the streets in town where until now, parking restrictions have been left in peace. White lines have been renewed in Castle Street, refreshed in Church Street, repainted in the Bull Ring and now, installed in Bear Street.
Until now, parking in Bear Street has been left well alone. It's a narrow one-way residential street where residents have long parked, always being careful to position their cars considerately leaving sufficient space for traffic to pass. White lines have now been installed to mark the bays where parking will henceforth be permitted, albeit for restricted times. The only problem is that the bays determine that parked cards should be parked further out into the road and this will undoubtedly block larger vehicles from using the road. (see the images above)
Why has the council taken until now, when discussions have been progressing towards establishing a common sense parking policy thoughout the county, to take this thoughtless, ill-considered and senseless action? Can it be anything to do with the fact that with the Purdah, councillors are restricted in what fuss they can cause; or is it conceivably just a councillor and perhaps some officers acting vindictively?
We shall shortly be publishing communications recently sent to us and others by Councillor Geraint Hopkins. County Councillor and Cabinet Member responsible for traffic and parking. You can make your own judgement! Also, an email we shall be sending to all candidates proposing to stand in the forthcoming Council elections to ascertain whether they support our campaign for a common sense approach to traffic and parking.
Watch this space for more.
